Friar Laurence is the figure of religion in the play who helps Romeo and Juliet attain their love. He plays an active role in the play to unite the lovers. He thinks that through this marriage the rivalry between the two families would resolve. He warns Romeo of his action in love that his actions will ultimately lead him to the path of destruction.

He gave the advice and warned at every step of the lovers. He calls the love to be 'violent delights'. He said, "These violent delights have violent ends". In his terms, he explained love to be wild and passionate at the initial stages. He advises the young lover to be calm and be moderate in such a situation. He warns Romeo of taking a rash decision. Friar Lawrence considered the love of the young couple to be 'the sweetest honey'. In the same line, he says that such a love can become 'loathsome' at no point of time. In this line, the paradox has been used. The paradox is the literary figure in which the contradicting ideas are placed in the same statement. The statement is logical but contradictory at the same point.
