The Divine Comedy is an Italian narrative poem by Dante Alighieri. It is one of the most important works in Italian literature and one of the greatest works of world literature. It is divided in three sections: Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso.

The first section describes Dante's journey through Hell, guided by the poet Virgil. Hell consists of nine descending rings, each holding sinners of different quality. The rings and the characteristics of the inhabitants give us insight into Dante's perspective and the morality of his society.
