The Ewells hunt out of season because it is one of the few ways they can provide food for the family. The family lives in poverty and many times does not have enough food to eat even with hunting. The community chooses not to enforce the laws with the Ewells in regards to hunting because if they were to take away one of the main sources of food for the Ewells, the family may starve. Allowing them to hunt is the right thing to do even if it is illegal during certain times of the year.
