Hades is the god responsible to where humans go after dying, the Underworld, where the sun doesn't reach. There are many texts that imply that Hades lives in a place far under the Earth and it's most likely why it got this name (Underworld). Acheron is one of the five river of the underworld in Greek mythology and is used in this excerpt to show how close to death the speaker is.
