  ! in the hours following the quake, juan and the other students huddled in the brand new gymnasium. the whole school had been there for an assembly when the quake hit. now the teachers were scurrying about like mice, trying to bring some order to the group.           “everybody remain calm! ” their shaky-voiced principal, mrs. furman, kept saying every few minutes.           “she needs to chill out,” juan’s friend tracy said as she pulled out her cell phone and tried to get a signal, then snapped it closed again.           “man, i need to get home to check on my mom,” juan said. “she’s alone at our apartment.”           “the streets are a mess,” tracy reminded him. “weren’t you listening? it’s more dangerous out there than in here. besides, there could be another one—a worse one, even. you’ve lived in california long enough to know that.”           an emergency radio was brought in and set on the stage, near where juan was standing. the news report blaring from it said that homes had collapsed all over town.           “that’s it! ” juan announced. “i’m going. my mom has nobody but me. i’ve got to make sure she’s okay.”           “well, take my cell phone then,” tracy handed hers to him, “just in case you can get a signal.”           “, t.,” juan said as he put it in his backpack.           just then, the ground shook beneath them, hard enough to knock juan off his feet. the radio fell off the stage and clattered to the ground beside him. as soon as the rumbling stopped, kids began running every which way. some made for the doors, while others called each other’s names, trying to find their friends. tracy sat down beside juan and put her arm around his shoulder.           “it’ll be all right, you gotta believe that,” she said. “your mom’s okay out there. i just have a feeling, and my feelings are nearly always right.” the chaotic tone of the passage above would also be appropriate for a. a story about the making of a tv show. b. a passage about a laboratory experiment. c. a description of two teenagers taking a hike. d. a story set during a major battle.
