Why was the killing of harrison bergeron so significant? did harrison have to die for the sake of the society?

It was significant because it shows that we all want to be equal but we can't. The definition of equality is different amongst people. Harrison Bergeron was introducing a new form of equality where everyone could be equal in their own way, shape and form. Handicaps were put in because competition=inequality. Harrison Bergeron questioned that by taking off his handi-cap. It was significant because it showed how we and the people in the story want equality but aren't quite sure about it. In the story, Harrison did have to die for the sake of society. If he had continued, then society would "fall apart" and everyone will be "inequal." These are the society's terms in the story and they abide by that. So in their eyes, yes he had to die or everyone else will follow suit.
