Which of the following is used to describe a single event that happened in the past? passé composé imparfait

You would use passe compose to simply relate events that happened in the past and to answer the question "What happened?"
Imparfait, is more like to describe what was going on in the past, or past habits etc. its answers the question "What was going on, when something else happened?"
btw we haven't learned imparfait yet and are starting next class which is like a few days from today, so I used the internet for that.
