in the very heart of france surrounded by his subjects henry iv converted to catholicism. as he ascended to the throne henry iv’s unfavorable protestant beliefs began to stir a lot of disapproval from the french people. the country was in a hurt and horrible condition, he understood this and knew the first thing required to begin restoring the country’s greatness was the acceptance and trust of his subjects. henry iv made a great sacrifice by leaving his original beliefs behind and adopting the ones of his people. during this significant event at the gates of paris he delivered his famous quote, “paris is worth a mass”.

a few of henry iv’s future accomplishments throughout the course of his reign included the temporary end to religious wars by establishing advanced policies in politics and religious freedom, and the expansion of commerce and development of territories nearby. unlike many other rulers before, henry iv is differentiated from the rest and for example known as the benevolent king who cared and made possible for his kingdom’s peasants to eat warm pot chicken every sunday. i think henry iv’s beautiful quote is more than just a vague restatement of what had just occurred. in my perspective, it’s meaning goes much deeper and demonstrates his commitment to put france’s interest before himself hinting at the not yet known future accomplishments of france to come.
