Steppe is a biome whose ecosystem is characterized by grassland or woodless plains and which has a dry climate. Most steppes are located in transition zones between desert and savanna in the northern hemisphere, in shelters adjacent to a mountain range and isolated from sea breezes.

The major steppe areas are found in Central Asia, Mongolia, China and the USA. Steppe areas are sparsely populated because of the dry climate and the lean soil that do not allow agriculture.

The climate is too dry for forest but not so dry that the landscape turns into desert. The dry climate is due to the plains being far away from the seas and close to the mountains. If the moisture increases in a steppe area, the vegetation also increases and the area is converted into a forest. The climate on the steppe is characterized by very hot summers and cold winters, especially on the steppes in the northern hemisphere. Steppe areas are often affected by long periods of drought and the lack of protective trees produces extreme winds. The combination of extreme heat and strong winds often causes grass fires to spread quickly.
