It is 35 km thick on average, but it is not very dense. The continental crust is mostly made out of granitic rocks. These rocks have been made out of mostly by basaltic magma/lava in the past. The majority of this magma/lava that has cooled and created the crust has remained in the form of igneous rocks, while some have experienced metamorphism, and some have become sedimentary rocks. The granite though is not the densest and heaviest of rocks, making this crust the lightest of all. The continental crust currently occupies around 40% of the top layer of the Earth, but that is something that has been constantly changing, with certain periods have only 10%,and others 60%.
