Procedure
set the date and time in stellarium to july 21, 2019, at 0: 0: 00. open the sky and viewing options and click “scale moon,” which will make the moon appear bigger and closer to what we actually see in real life.
note: you might have to use stellarium, any version will do : )
i will rate the answer as soon as the answer is posted, you so much : )
the moon should be around the eastern horizon. if you click on the moon, stellarium will give you a lot of information just as it would for a star. most important for us is the “phase.” this number indicates the moon phase as a decimal. this number runs from 0.0 on a new moon to 1.0 on a full moon and back down to 0.0 from the full moon to the new moon. this number indicates a decimal fraction of how much the moon is illuminated. for example, on a half-moon (1st or 3rd quarter), the phase will be 0.50, indicating the moon is 50% illuminated
click on the telescope icon, this will simulate a telescope tracking system. let time advance at a comfortable pace to watch the moon rise and answer the following.
3) what constellation is the moon near at moonrise?
4) does the moon stay in the exact same spot within the constellation from moonrise to sunset or does it move relative to the constellation?
5) what is the phase of the moon on this night (i. e. a waxing crescent, waning gibbous, 1st quarter, (hint: recall that if the moon is waxing, the right side is illuminated. if a moon is waning, the left side is illuminated)
6) instead of specific times of moonrise and moonset, we are going to indicate whether it is day or night when these occur. the definition of the day will be when the sun is still above the horizon. on this date, indicate whether the moonrise (moon rises above the horizon) and moonset (moon sets below the horizon) occur during the day or during the night:
i) moonrise -
ii) moonset -
move the time forward to 4: 40: 00 (still july 21). this is about the time when the moon is at it’s highest altitude. open the time and date window (with the clock on pause). position the sky such that the moon is in the middle of the screen and slightly right of center. with the date and time window opens, increase the days a few times
i forgot the limit, so i'mn sorry.
