part 1 - folds
there is a geologic map of harrisburg, pa. this is what the underlying geology looks like in this region. each color is a different rock type of a particular age as indicated by the legend on the left side. for your reference, pennsylvanian is the youngest age shown and ordovician is the oldest age shown . the small insert in the upper right is called a cross-section. it shows what this area from a to b would look like in the vertical (the map view is looking down on the area horizontally, vertically is what the rocks would look like inside the earth). one way to think about a cross section is to imagine a cliff of rock on the side of a road—in looking at it, you might see various layers of rock or structures that were formed in the earth at different times.
