What is the difference between point-source and nonpoint-source pollution?

    Pollutants are introduced into the environment through sources. These sources can be classified as punctual or diffuse.

    Point-source pollution loads are introduced through individualized releases such as sewage or industrial effluent discharge. Point loads are easily identified and therefore their control is more efficient and faster.

    Nonpoint-source pollution loads are thus called because they do not have a specific launch point or because they do not come from a precise point of generation, thus becoming difficult to control and identify. Examples of diffuse loads: pesticide infiltration into the soil from agricultural fields, nutrient input into streams and rivers through urban drainage.
