The nebular theory postulates the formation of our solar systems. According to this theory, the solar system started as gas and dust which later collapsed, heating up as they did and separating into two planet types.  

The different planet types created were the terrestrial, forming on the inside and the Jovian planets which formed outside of the solar system.

Jovian planets are ice-rich and developed by drawing the gas present in the nebula.  Phenomena consistent with the nebular theory include other ice rich planets, similar in size with Mars in a star, a terrestrial planet having a moon as large as earth’s moon.
