The cerebral hemispheres are two semi-symmetrical structures connected to each other by nerve fibers.

The cerebral hemispheres supply motor function to the contralateral side of the body from which it receives sensory input. The left hemisphere controls the right half of the body, and the right hemisphere controls the left side of the body. Both hemispheres also receive stimuli that convey sensory and visual sensations, mostly from half of the body's apparatus, while auditory input comes from both sides. Pathways that convey senses of smell and taste to the cerebral cortex themselves are parallel (they do not cross into the other hemisphere).

Despite this arrangement, the cerebral hemispheres are not functionally equal. In each individual, one hemisphere is dominant. The dominant hemisphere (left in right-handed people) controls language, mathematical and analytical functions, and completeness. The other hemisphere controls simple spatial concepts, facial recognition, some auditory aspects, and emotion.
