The roots of conflicts in the balkans can be traced to two scenarios which where;

1. The Ottoman Empire was unable to reform itself and it could not deal with the growing number of ethnic nationalism of its diverse peoples.

2. The members of the great powers quarreled amongst themselves and they also failed to ensure that the Ottomans would carry out those reforms that were needed at that time.
