With the growing demand for oil in the United States and throughout the world, the acquisition and use of oil resources is a critical and heated
issue. Being the world's largest consumer of oil, the U. S. continually looks for ways to satisfy the demand for the resource. Some believe the
remote and pristine Alaskan wilderness holds the answer to the oil question. Alaska is home to many natural resources, including extensive oil
reserves, but drilling for oil in Alaska has become a contentious topic. The 2010 Deepwater Horizon incident in the Gulf of Mexico-in which oil
leaked unchecked into the Gulf of Mexico for months—was one of the worst environment disasters in U. S. history. A similar or even smaller event
in desolate Alaska could result in incalculable damage.
