When the first Europeans arrived on the eastern coasts of North America and then started to migrate west, they sent letters and wrote in their diaries and journals about the new lands they had reached. Many of them wrote of the tall, dense, prairie grasses that covered the area now known as Iowa and Illinois. This area is in the humid continental climate zone an area that should support forests rather than prairie grasses. Scientists have speculated that prehistoric Native American groups may have burned the forests in the region so often that fire-resistant grasses eventually replaced the trees. What other reasons could there be for this interesting phenomenon? Rewrite the question and share your thoughts in a paragraph. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers.
