The geography of Ancient China shaped the way the civilization and culture developed. The large land was isolated from much of the rest of the world by dry deserts to the north and west, the Pacific Ocean to the east, and impassable mountains to the south.

China's history is sometime marked to have begun as early as the 16th century BC, but in terms of physical evidence, tortoise shells with carving similar to ancient Chinese writing from the Shang Dynasty have been given carbon dates of approximately 1500 BC.
