Exercise 3-D The Annual Cycle of Air Temperature
[Text, p. 99-100, Figures 3.14, 3.18.]
If you had to make the choice, in which of these two places would you rather spend a full
year for independent study? Auckland is the leading city on the North Island of New
Zealand. It is a major port, corresponding in location (37°S) about to San Francisco and
Lisbon in the northern hemisphere. Once the capital city of New Zealand, it has a major
university and is surrounded by volcanoes. Churchill, in northern Manitoba at lat, 59°N.,
is a town on the western shore of Hudson Bay, lying at the northern terminus of the Hud-
son Bay Railroad that connects it with Regina, far to the south. Churchill has had a long,
rich history as a fur-trading center, for it was the site of a Hudson's Bay Company trad-
ing post, established in 1717. One factor of the many influencing your decision would surely
be climate, and in particular the annual temperature cycle.
The figures given in Table A are monthly mean air temperatures (°F) for Auckland and
Churchill. On the blank graph provided, plot each monthly mean value as a point. Con-
nect the points with a smooth curve. Label each curve. Because monthly values are rounded
to the nearest one-half degree, points may lie slightly to one side or the other of your fit-
ted curve.
(1) Calculate the annual temperature range for each station.
