In order for a landmass to be considered a subcontinent, it has to be clearly defined with physical boundaries, to have a very large area, and to be situated on a separate tectonic plate from the one it is connected with.

India has clear physical boundaries from the rest of Asia, with high mountain ranges, such as the Himalayas and Pamir, being the dividing line. The area that India accounts for is similar to that of Europe for example. Last, but not least, India lies on its own separate tectonic plate, the Indian plate, which has colided with the Eurasian plate tens of millions of years ago, thus giving an impression that it is one, not two separate plates.
