Alfred Wegener published his theory of continental drift in 1915. While backed by sound, previously published scientific evidence, his theory was not widely accepted. In fact, it was met with opposition. Which of the following correctly explains other scientists’ opposition to his theory? Wegener showed how the continents could have fit together like puzzle pieces, once forming Pangaea. Other scientists believed continents were in different places but never in one large continent.

Wegener used the presence of similar fossils found on continents now divided by oceans and their similar land formations as evidence. Other scientists believed these organisms swam across the ocean and the similar land formations were just coincidental.

Wegener tried to explain his theory by describing the fluidity of the mantle. Other scientists believed the mantle was solid rock.

Wegener thought the continents floated on top of oceanic rock, allowing them to move. Other scientists believed the crust of Earth contracted and shrank, causing movement.
