He went to South Africa in 1893 to study law for one year and while being there, he realized how the Indians were being maltreated due to their race. This situation and his experience made him realize to fight for the injustices happening in the country and to stay longer in order to make a radical change. He founded the "Natal Indian Congress" in 1894 in order to fight for the Indian traders in South Africa and their struggle for independence. Later on, he organized a mass civil disobedience as a nonviolent protest.
