because it is largely an inhospitable desert

Most of Northern Africa is inhospitable due to the very hot and dry climates of the massive Sahara Desert.  Most people who live in Northern Africa live on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and the Nile River Delta in Egypt, where conditions are more tolerable.
