The contour lines are usually defined as the lines that represent equal heights. These contour lines are commonly used in the topographic maps in order to determine the height of the area from the mean sea level.

On the other hand, relief refers to the differences between the highest and the lowest heights (elevations). It can simply be derived from the map.

These two features of the map are directly related to one another, as by observing the contour lines, the relief and the topography of the area can be easily determined.
