South Africa stretches from warm tropics in the north to chilly waters in the south. Its geography and climate support a variety of crops, and it has large deposits of diamonds, gold, and other minerals. In the 19th century, both Dutch and British colonists laid claim to these lands. The Dutch settlers, known as Boers or Afrikaners, formed their own republics. Boers had enslaved Africans and imported other people as laborers from Asia. Both the British and the Boers seized lands from Zulus, Xhosa, and other Africans. Even more, Africans were forced to work for Boer and British colonists after the discovery of large gold and diamond deposits around 1870. (That's the reading you need for the question)
