Napoleon Chagnon described his inability for an entire year, to obtain the most fundamental data anthropologists need -- kinship and genealogical relationships --because the Yanomamo obeyed a strict cultural taboo against uttering the names of the dead. Instead, they a. made up fake names for dead relatives, filling Chagnon's entire year's research notes with false information.
