Excavation is usually defined as the process by which the materials present on the surface of the earth are eliminated by the use of heavy machineries and equipments.

This excavation method is usually carried out in the mining sites, and also to make a reservoir, dam, and pumping of water, this method is efficiently applied. It is carried out more extensively in open-cast mining and underground mining.

There are various hazards and risks in working at the excavation sites. Some of them are as follows-

The surface materials may collapse any time due to the weight of the overburden, as a result of which the people working under it may be highly affected. Low amount of oxygen is usually present in the subsurface, as a result of which it becomes difficult for many of them to breathe. In the case of underground coal mines, a sudden occurrence of fire can cause great damage to the people working at a certain depth.

Out of all these, the major risk associated with the excavation method is the subsidence of the materials that are present on the surface, which can cause a tremendous effect on many people working below it.
