Why are mexico, central america, south america, and the caribbean called "latin america"?

Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean are called "Latin America" because they share similar cultures.  Because the people in these places all speak Spanish, and the explorers that came into Latin America are from Europe, where Latin was the predominant language.
