The treaty of Waitangi was signed to recognize the rights of the native people and to provide protection against the French. It recognized land ownership, forests and other possessions as the rightful belonging of the Waitangi natives.  

Other aspects recognized by the treaty included similar treatment of the natives and the British settlers, protection of the Maori culture as well as recognizing the inhabitants who existed before the British settlers. There were two versions of the treaty written in English and Maori which was later discovered not to have a similar meaning. This later caused a battle and other problems.
