In the heat of the 2008 presidential election, Barack Obama's opponents shot a chilling narrative that portrayed him as an enigmatic figure with a group of shadowy collaborators, including a black nationalist preacher, a Palestinian professor and an "unrepentant domestic terrorist". That imaginary terrorist was Bill Ayers, a former leader of the Weather Underground. The McCain campaign spent millions of dollars deliberately demonizing Ayers and punishing Senator Obama for "playing around with terrorists" in Sarah Palin's immortal phrase.

It wasn't the first time Ayers had found his face plastered in all media under the label "Terrorist". After his memoir, Fugitive Days, The Story of His Life in Students for a Democratic Society and later in the Weather Underground, was published on September 10, 2001, he came under heavy fire from right-wing media that bizarrely linked him to the world trade center tragedy. Over the years, Bill Ayers has become a household name and enemy of the state through the radical right. In reality, Ayers is a dedicated teacher, father, and social justice advocate, and his "seedy past" is actually the story of a passionate antiwar activist.
