Aids was officially named in the 1980s.

In the 1980s  people first became aware of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and it was officially recognised as a new health condition. At first the disease was called all sorts of names relating to the word 'gay' . In September 1982 the 'disease' was finally named AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
