The pulmonary circulation, also called small circulation, is that which takes blood from the heart to the lung and from the lung to the heart. It begins when blood leaves the heart's right ventricle through the pulmonary artery, which divides and follows each into a lung. In the lungs, branching of the arteries occurs until they become small-caliber vessels called capillaries.

In the capillaries, which involve the pulmonary alveoli, gas exchange (hematosis) occurs. The oxygen inside the alveoli passes into the blood, which becomes oxygenated, and the carbon dioxide present in the blood passes into the capillary to be eliminated. After gas exchange, the blood moves towards the pulmonary veins, which will take the oxygenated blood back to the heart through the left atrium.
