Important nutrition needed by a pregnant woman includes calcium, iron, proteins and folic acid. The folic acid will help to stop occurrence of birth defects especially in the important parts of the unborn baby such as the brain and spinal cord. To obtain this nutrient on daily basis, doctors recommend an intake of 400 micrograms of folic acid. The common food sources for folic acid are citrus fruits, beans, and leafy green vegetables.

Calcium is an important mineral because it is used in building our bones and teeth. The sources of calcium are milk, cheese, salmon, and leafy greens such as kale. Pregnant women need more than 1000 milligrams of calcium per day.

Iron is essential nutrient in pregnant women because the mineral helps in making of blood that is required to be supply enough oxygen to the baby. Inadequate iron can cause conditions such as Anemia and increase the chances of infections in the mother. Iron rich food includes meat, poultry, fish and dried beans.

Protein rich foods are required by pregnant women to support the growth of a healthier baby. Food sources for proteins are meat, eggs, fish, milk, nuts and beans.
