Stages of GAS

1: Alarm

Upon perceiving a stressor, the body reacts with a “fight-or-flight” response and the sympathetic nervous system is stimulated as the body’s resources are mobilized to meet the threat or danger.

negative effect:  blood sugar level goes up

2: Resistance

The body resists and compensates as the parasympathetic nervous system attempts to return many physiological functions to normal levels while body focuses resources against the stressor and remains on alert.

negative effect if the stress remain on alert:  person can struggle to concentrate or become irritable

3: Exhaustion

at this stage, the body is depleted of its energy resources and will continue to recover.  The person no longer can fight the stress and may experience tiredness, depression, anxiety, or unable to cope.

negative effects:  the person may risk developing more stress-related health conditions
