Foam Roll calves exercise is a type of exercise performed by using the body weight to exert pressure on a particular body part through an object placed between the soft tissue covering part of the(Calves) and the floor. By continuously rolling on the object with the applied pressure of body weight , the myofascial connective tissues which encapsulated the contact part ( e.g muscles ) is softened/ massaged.Thus the primary aim is to increase myofacial mobiltity, by stretching the myofacial connective tissues and it encapsulated structure.
Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy; is loss of nerves sensitivity in part of the body due to the failure of insulin to increase cellular utilisation of glucose, and therefore accumulation of glucose in the cell.It is marked with pain, numbness in the lower limbs.
Therefore ,any exercise that applied mechanical pressures on the nerves or spike up blood glucose levels, should not be undertaken by Diabetes with peripheral nephropathy.
Foam roll Calves, is an anaerobic exercise, which exert high mechanical pressure on the nerves, blood vessels and facial connectives tissues of the contact part(calves), thus causing further damages to the nerves and aggravating the neuropathic nerve pain.
The continuous application of pressure produces heat from intense metabolic activity in the calves leading to glycogenlysis, (breaking down of stored glycogen in the muscles);release of glucose to the blood stream with corresponding spikes in blood glucose. Thus the above two risks effects provided reasons why this exercise is not recommended.
