Three common defence mechanisms might be listed as follows: Denial - refusing to accept that something difficult has happened, and carrying on as normal with an absence of reaction to the situaiton. Repression - externally this defence mechanism looks similar to denial, but is different in that instead of simply pretending something never happened, the memory of something bad happening is forgotten altogether and pushed down deep into the subconscious. Disaplacement - taking the negative feelings from something bad that has happened, and acting in a negative way towards someone or something that is not in itself the cause of your negative feelings.
