Well, in this case. If you need a reason for him to trust you. I would not give him a reason. I would own up to your mistake calmy. And explain deeply like dply how bad your feel. Only apologize if you actually mean your sorry though. If you have lied more than once. Tell your reasoning. DOnt make excuses that worsens it. Be honest. Even if honesty hurts. And depending on his illness mental or physical. I would show him you care, less with words and more with actions. For example, do his hard stuff. Be kind. Dont yell even if he is upset which makes you upset. Also, since you cheated I would not anymore.
