Compare between formal and social demography

Demography is derived from two Greek words- demos which means people and graphein which means describe. So basically demography means description of people. Demography relies on study of data.

The part of demography that deals with quantitative aspect i.e., measurement and analysis of components of population change is called formal demography . For this it has a highly developed mathematical methods for forecasting population growth and changes in the composition of population.

But also, Social demography or Population studies on the other hand, enquires into the wider causes and consequences of population structure & change. Social demographers believe that social processes and structure regulate demographic processes.
