Explain why some people become addicted to certain substances and others don’t?

Some people who grow up in enviroments surrounded by drugs and alcohol are more likely to become addicted, while others that grow up in an enviroment with those influences are less likely to become addicted to these. Another explanation is that people who are struggling with mental health (depression, anxiety, etc) are more likely to become addicted because they use the drug as their "escape" from the reality of their situation.
