Many years before the evangelical age, the Jewish people were slaves in Egypt. Then God, through Moses, delivered him from slavery and took him to the "promised land". Moses, like David, Abraham, Jacob, were leaders who led his people. They were political leaders, who helped to found and structure Jewish consciousness. They were leaders of a people, of a nation.

Most Old Testament prophets described this same path. The common word (when analyzing the coming Messiah) was a triumphant leader, a chief. He would lead his people to freedom and defeat his dominators.

When Jesus was born, Palestine was under the rule of the Roman empire. The Jewish people longed for freedom. Many revolts had already happened and would happen in this province. More than ever, the word Messiah was associated with the idea of liberation from Roman laws. A true Messiah would be a warrior Messiah who would liberate his country and be its king.
