Frederic Bremers 1938 isolated brain study showed by transecting different areas of mice brains that the brainstems pontine system promotes REM and the midbrain promotes SWS. A nightmare occurs when an individual is awakened from a rather unflattering REM episode. This can easily be confused with a night terror that awakens the person out of SWS. By far the best dream to have is the wet dream which is known by scientists as nocturnal emission.
