Especially within contact sports, there's is barley any media coverage for the female side of sport - especially in male dominated sports like rugby or football. This means then that female teams or clubs don't get sponsored (or not as much compared to males) through the national governing body of the sport. So basically there is less funding for the sport, so there aren't as many female clubs and athletes get paid less (this is explained by the Golden tri angle, where media, sponsorship and the sport are linked).

Now this is only for females participating in male dominated sports, and there is an increasing amount of media attention focousing on female sports, so the gap between se.xes in sport is decreasing.

Lastly I wouldn't say females are descriminated in every sport, as in the female dominated sports, the same happens for men e.g volleyball.
