Most athletes play with major pain, much less minor pain and something such as a small cut may not even be noticed by the athlete. Most athletes tend to play even if they have an injury that they shouldn't be playing with, so if they can play, they usually do. 

Being unconscious is the only way (in this scenario, at least) that an athlete won't play. And usually when athletes don't play it's because they didn something to deserve not to be able to play and they got benched or they have broken bones or they're unconscious.
