The three Fates in Greek mythology are known as the Moerae. They were the white-robed incarnations of destiny and were often described as being ugly, old, and stern women. The Fates are responsible for controlling the metaphorical thread of life of every mortal from birth to death. They determine a person’s fate and how a life will pass on.

The three Fates were: Clotho, the one who spins the thread of life; Lachesis, the allotter, the determiner of how long a person lives; and Atropos the one who cuts the thread of life with her shears which causes the death of a mortal.
