European monarchs feared that revolutionary ideas, based on the Enlightenment, would spread to their nations and cause the same kind of chaos that France was experiencing. The rulers of these nations wanted to maintain their power and they saw the French Revolution as a threat. When Kink Louis XVI was executed, these rulers became even more alarmed.
