Thomas Hobbes was an english philosopher born in 1588. His constribution to the idea of Social Contract was born during the English civil war. The confrontation between the Monarchists and the Parlamentarians (the firsts in defense of the absolute reign of the King, and the latters demanding more power) was the context in which Hobbes developed his thinking.

He stated men were self-interest beings, submitted to authorities only under the goal of obtaining their own desires. Human nature leads to self-preservation, and to obtain it, men are willing to rationally seek communal agreement with others.

By this, Social Contrac idea is proposed, which states both moral and political obligations depend on an agreement among men to form a society in which they live.
