Why were the selma to montgomery marches significant to the civil rights movement course?

The marches led President Lyndon Johnson to  call for federal voting rights legislation to protect African Americans from barriers that prevented them from voting. This ultimately led to The Voting Rights Act of 1965, signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
