Read the prompt and answer it many of the alliances that existed in 1914 when world war i began were actually created around the time of the congress of vienna (1814 - 1815). the congress of vienna was where the european powers were dealing with what to do after napoleon's defeat. one of their goals was to create a "balance of power" in europe so that no one country (or person) would ever be strong enough to dominate the entire continent again. this led to many countries making alliances to protect each other if they were ever attacked. their goal was an important one, though. they didn't want to see the rise of another napoleon. now, exactly 100 years after the congress of vienna began, we are seeing these same alliances drag country after country into a war that began with the assassination of a minor leader from austria-hungary by terrorists from another minor power, serbia. the alliances made at the congress of vienna gave europe a century without one country or person being able to take over the entire continent. however, they also turn a minor conflict in 1914 into world war i by creating a chain reaction that dragged countries into a war they didn't start. in the box below, answer the following: do you believe that the countries of europe did the right thing to create a balance of power and alliances after the fall of napoleon? was 100 years without a "new napoleon" worth the danger of possibly making a small war into something huge? explain your answer.
