Virginia was a business colony and therefore the people were more diverse whereas New England settlers were establishing a new home and brought their families with them creating a homogeneous (all the same) community.

Virginia was a colony set up to be a business. Wealthy and poor came to settle eventually adding blacks into the community as slaves. New England was settled by religious separatists looking for a new home where they could live by their own rules. They brought whole families from their community in England creating a new community of all similar people. The colonies of New England were harsh to people that disagree and often exiled them from the community. New Englanders did not have much contact with Native Americans and did not have slaves.
